Parents' Night In #54: Rear Window (1954), Alfred Hitchcock's Masterpiece

Kelly & Justin are back after a little hiatus to talk about our favorite Hitchcock film, Rear Window, starring James Stewart as a photographer stuck in his apartment with a broken leg, who may or may not have witnessed a murder across the courtyard of his apartment building, and Grace Kelly as his glamorous girlfriend.  Shot entirely on a single soundstage, Rear Window is full of little subplots involving the neighbors, while building suspense around whether or not Lars Thorwald (Raymond Burr) has murdered and dismembered his wife.

We'll talk about the film and why it's our favorite of Hitchcock's, our love of Jimmy Stewart, who's hotter - Grace Kelly or Donna Reed, and whether or not we pronounce the "th" in the word "clothes."

Parents' Night In #53: Austin Powers - The Spy Who Shagged Me (1999)

GROOVY BABY, YEAAAHH!  Get ready to board the spiraly time machine and travel back to the swingin' 60s as Justin & Kelly watch the second Austin Powers movie!  Starring Mike Myers, Mike Myers, Mike Myers, and Heather Graham, The Spy Who Shagged Me is our favorite of the three Powers films, where the filmmakers went full-on screwball comedy.  Joining Austin Powers and his nemesis Dr. Evil are Mike Myers' third character Fat Bastard, Austin's new love interest and fellow spy Felicity Shagwell, and of course the diminutive Mini-Me, played by the late Verne Troyer.  Austin Powers 2 is arguably the most quotable of the three films and for us captures the series' hallmarks perfectly.  We'll discuss the film, the fashion of both the 60s and the 90s, the genius of Mike Myers and his characters, and Kelly's confusing film rating system (It gets weird).

Parents' Night In #52: The Gold Rush (1925)

Happy 2021 everybody!  Justin & Kelly are back to watch and review The Gold Rush, Charlie Chaplin's 1925 silent classic about a prospector trying to make his way in the frozen Yukon!  We'll discuss Chaplin's genius, his perfectionism, his many romantic liasons, and of course the arduous production of this film.  Oh, and we're starting a dry January, so this episode will be the first PNI ever to not feature booze.  Weird.  So join us for some wintery fun as we marvel at the comedic mastery of Charlie Chaplin!

Parents' Night In #51: A Christmas Carol (1984)

Merry Christmas and welcome to another PNI, where we watch and discuss our favorite film version of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, the 1984 made-for-television film starring George C. Scott, David Warner, Roger Rees, Suzannah York, and Edward Woodward.  This film has been an annual staple in our house for years, and we love Scott's naturalistic, matter-of-fact portrayal of the miserable cheapskate Ebenezer Scrooge, who finds joy and human connection after being visited by various Christmas spirits (we're enjoying a couple Christmas spirits of our own, if you know what I mean..).  So pour yourself something nice and join in the holiday cheer with Justin & Kelly as we watch A Christmas Carol!

Parents' Night In #50: Elf (2003)

Happy Holidays!  Welcome to Christmastime 2020!  Justin and Kelly are back to watch and discuss the Will Ferrell comedy Elf, directed by Jon Favreau and co-starring Zooey Deschanel, James Caan, Mary Steenburgen and Bob Newhart.  Kelly fell in love with Elf when it first came out, but it took the cynical Justin a few viewings to really appreciate its family-friendly innocence.  We'll talk not only about the film itself but also about experiencing Christmas as children vs. as adults, how old we were when we stopped believing in Santa Claus, and we'll answer the question "Which Christmas movie defines you as a person?"

Parents' Night In #44: Leon The Professional (1994)

Kelly and Justin are back (in our new house!) for a movie review of another film we bonded over before we were dating, Luc Besson's action-drama masterpiece Leon!  Starring Jean Reno as Leon, a scenery-chewing Gary Oldman as DEA cop Norman Stansfield, and an 11-year-old Natalie Portman as Mathilda; Portman proved even at her young age to be a prodigious onscreen talent.  Leon (or The Professional) as it was called in the US, is the story of a socially stunted Italian hitman who develops a close relationship with an orphaned girl, taking her under his wing as she vows revenge on a crooked DEA officer (Oldman, our favorite of all his performances) who killed her family.  Leon is full of intense, violent set pieces but also contains touching, delicate moments between its two protagonists.  An underrated gem of a film.

Justin and Kelly are back to talk about an old-school comic book movie that didn't get enough love, Dick Tracy!  Starring and directed by Warren Beatty, with Madonna, Al Pacino, Glenne Headly, Dick Van Dyke, William Forsythe, and a host of other supporting actors, Dick Tracy was a precursor to modern comic book films like Sin City and 300, using exaggerated makeup effects, colors and sets to create an immersive, living comic strip.  Deemed a box office disappointment at the time, Dick Tracy has nonetheless aged better than its contemporaries in our opinion and remains a visual feast to this day.  We'll talk about the film itself, Madonna as a pop icon, Warren Beatty's prodigious love life, Al Pacino's 90s overacting, and we'll take a deep dive into the expression "You don't know your ass from your elbow."  Join in on the fun!

Parents' Night In #41: The Fugitive (1993)

Kelly and Justin love Harrison Ford, and it's summer, so we're watching one of his great summer films, The Fugitive!  Released in 1993 and co-starring Tommy Lee Jones and Julianne Moore, The Fugitive is a taut action thriller about a wrongly convicted doctor on the run from the authorities and trying to clear his name.  We'll talk about the film, Chicago, the Chicago accent (Justin has a lot of fun with this), and our difficulty stringing together coherent sentences at times.  This episode eventually got out of control like the derailed train in The Fugitive!  Check it out...

Parents' Night In #40: The Lost Boys (1987), Kelly's Live Reaction

It's summertime and that means walks on the beach, fun in the sun, amusement park rides, and of course, vampires.  Hang out with us and listen to Justin introduce Kelly to The Lost Boys, that popcorn movie disguised as a vampire film.  Directed by Joel Schumacher (RIP) and starring Jason Patric, Corey Haim, Corey Feldman, Jami Gertz, Dianne Weist, and of course Kiefer Sutherland, The Lost Boys has been one of Justin's favorite horror-comedy romps since its 1987 release.  This delightfully 80s favorite is full of exhilarating horror set pieces, vampire humor, and big hair.  We'll talk about not only this film but Joel's other works, our favorite vampire films, and lots more. Parents' Night In #39: Scrooged (1988)

It's only six months till Christmas, have you gotten your shopping done?  Welcome to another Parents' Night In boozy movie review, where Justin & Kelly enjoy some beers and watch a movie!  Recorded last November, this episode is about the Bill Murray 80s classic Scrooged!  Based on the immortal Charles Dickens novel A Christmas Carol, Scrooged brings everyone's favorite holiday tale into the modern age, with Bill Murray's character Frank Cross standing in for mean old Ebenezer.  Also starring Alfre Woodard, John Forsythe, David Johanssen, Carol Kane, and Robert Mitchum, Scrooged has become a cult classic for everyone too cynical to admit they like Christmas movies.

Parents' Night In #38: Stand By Me (1986)

Kelly & Justin are back for a movie review our favorite coming-of-age movie, Rob Reiner's Stand By Me!  Based on Stephen King's novella The Body, SBM tells the story of four 12-year-old boys who go off on an adventure to find the body of Ray Brower, who went missing a few days earlier.  With excellent performances by Wil Wheaton, River Phoenix, Corey Feldman, Jerry O'Connell, and Kiefer Sutherland, SBM is timeless, funny, poignant, and makes us reminisce about our own childhood and loss of innocence.  We'll discuss the various child actors in the film, Kiefer, Stephen King's reputation for writing bad endings, and when we found our respective selves as teenagers.

So grab a cold drink, sit back, and hang out with us as we talk Stand By Me!

Kelly is drinking some Pionetto prosecco while Justin is enjoying craft beer from Vitamin Sea Brewing and Widowmaker Brewing!
